Thailand's Last Gorilla, Auntie Bua, Back in Spotlight as Pata Zoo Reopens Enclosure
Thailand's last gorilla, Auntie Bua, has been in the spotlight again as Pata Zoo reopens her enclosure for limited public viewing. The zoo released a new close-up photograph of the Western Lowland Gorilla, her first in over four years. Animal rights groups, including the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), have long campaigned for her relocation to a sanctuary.
Auntie Bua, also known as Bua Noi, has lived at Pata Zoo since 1992. She is the only gorilla left in Thailand due to international law restrictions on imports. Despite campaigns for her release, the zoo has resisted, citing potential difficulties in adjusting to new surroundings and risk of infection. The zoo considers Bua Noi as private property, acquired before certain wildlife laws came into effect.
The zoo's recent statement assures the public that Auntie Bua is healthy and comfortable. Her enclosure will be open to the public on a limited schedule, allowing visitors a closer look at the gorilla often described as 'the world's loneliest gorilla'.
While the zoo's decision to reopen Auntie Bua's enclosure may provide some comfort to those concerned about her well-being, animal rights groups continue to advocate for her relocation to a sanctuary. The future of Thailand's last gorilla remains a contentious issue.
