Fight Against Gender Violence Continues in Toledo, Spain

On the sweltering afternoon of the fifth of August, Toledo's Vega Park played host to a significant gathering against machist violence. The event, organised by the Local Council for Women in the Vega, saw the participation of political parties PP, PSOE, and IU-Podemos, with the absence of Vox.

Irene Carmena, secretary for the Organization of Socialist Youth of Toledo, and Pablo García, vice-spokesperson of the Municipal Socialist Group, were present and read a manifesto against machist violence. The manifesto frontally rejected the elimination of equality policies and called for an end to discourses that minimize or whitewash machismo.

Helena Rodríguez, secretary for Citizen Attention of the Local Executive of the PSOE, was also present at the event. Ana Pérez, the councilor for Culture and Heritage, condemned the killings of two women by their partners or former partners in July and lamented their recurrence. Txema Fernández, the spokesperson from IU-Podemos, called on the Toledo City Council's Socialist Group to address the Cortes to implement the Education for Equality subject.

The Education for Equality subject, approved in the 2018 law in Castilla La Mancha, is yet to be implemented and has no budgetary allocation. Txema Fernández expressed concern over the pact between PP and Vox in the Toledo City Council and denounced institutional complicity hidden behind political pacts that relegate women's rights.

Spain has a legal framework addressing gender violence, with specialized courts and judicial levels to handle these cases, reflecting an institutional commitment to tackling intimate-partner violence. However, there is insufficient publicly available detailed information from current sources that specifically describe the ongoing fight and political party or local council initiatives in Toledo, Spain, in 2025. For more precise and recent information on Toledo’s local actions, consulting municipal official communications or Spanish regional government releases would be necessary.

The manifesto was a powerful reminder of the importance of continued efforts in the fight against gender violence. As the temperature exceeded thirty degrees, the participants remained steadfast in their commitment to a more just and equitable society, reminding everyone of the telephone number (016) for victims of gender violence, which does not leave a trace on the bill and can save lives.
