Top earner taxes will not be alleviated by Klingbeil

Social Security Contributions Remain Stable for Employees and Companies, No Relief for Top Earners

Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has reiterated his commitment to maintaining stable contributions to social security for both employees and companies. In an interview with "Bild am Sonntag", Klingbeil expressed concern over the increasing social security contributions, stating that they have a detrimental impact on both employees' take-home pay and businesses' wage costs.

Contributions to health and long-term care insurance are particularly at risk of a sudden surge, which can only be temporarily offset by higher budgetary subsidies. However, Klingbeil highlighted that this is not a sustainable solution. "The finance minister cannot be constantly called upon for more money," he stressed. "We need structural reforms to permanently stabilize the contributions."

Regarding the planned tax reform of the black-red coalition, Klingbeil has ruled out providing relief to top earners. He argued that it would be unfair to provide relief to politicians such as himself more than to a cashier at a supermarket. Klingbeil's focus on drawing up the budgets for the current and coming year is to secure Germany's economic growth, create jobs, and reduce energy prices by stimulating investments with super-depreciation.

Klingbeil, who is also the leader of the SPD, aims to rebuild the party, acknowledging that the 16.4% in the 2025 election was a clear sign of the need for change within the party. The focus has shifted from managing public funds to supporting working people, according to Klingbeil.

It is worth noting that Lars Klingbeil, who assumed the role of Federal Finance Minister in 2025, has been primarily focusing on stabilizing and reforming social insurance systems, including health and long-term care insurance, rather than implementing targeted tax relief for specific income groups.
