Walmart's shrimp products could potentially be radioactive, as the Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning about certain lots of Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp sold at Walmart. The recall stems from the presence of radioactive Cesium-137, a man-made isotope created during nuclear reactions, likely introduced through sanitary violations at an Indonesian processor.

The recalled shrimp was farm-raised White Vannamei Shrimp, imported from Indonesia and processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati. The FDA has added the company to an import alert and halted all products from the supplier until the contamination issues are resolved.

Three lots of Great Value Frozen Raw Ez Peel Tail-On Farm-Raised White Vannamei Shrimp were impacted, with the affected products coming in 2lb bags, having a Best-By date of March 15, 2027, and an item code of 738108. The impacted lot codes are 8005540-1, 8005538-1, and 8005539-1.

Walmart has halted sales and removed these shrimp from stores, cooperating with the supplier to investigate the issue. The FDA continues to trace implicated products throughout the supply chain and has issued an import alert to prevent entry of shrimp from this supplier.

Consumers are advised not to eat, sell, or serve these products and to discard any purchased shrimp from this batch. Long exposure to low-level radiation is associated with an elevated risk of cancer.

The FDA is collaborating with Indonesian seafood regulatory authorities to determine the cause of the contamination. The agency is also working with Customs and Border Patrol to prevent contaminated shrimp from reaching consumers.

Another company, Southwind Foods, LLC in California, has voluntarily recalled frozen shrimp due to possible Cs-137 contamination, suggesting that the issue might be broader than a single shipment or supplier.

The FDA's investigation into the contamination remains ongoing. Consumers who have purchased the affected products are encouraged to check the lot codes and discard the shrimp immediately. The recalled products were sold in Walmart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia.
