In an unexpected and unfortunate incident, a woman in her 50s sustained severe injuries during a lion attack at the Darling Downs Zoo in Queensland, Australia on Sunday. The woman, who has been a long-time, well-known visitor to the zoo, was observing keepers work with animals in the predator enclosure when the attack occurred.

The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the gender of the lion and why it targeted the woman, remain unclear. However, it is known that the woman lost her left arm as a result of the attack. She was immediately airlifted to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital for emergency surgery, but unfortunately, her arm could not be saved, according to ABC News.

The woman, who is an experienced Australian, had known the lions for 20 years but was not a regular visitor or zoo employee. The zoo, which also houses leopards, cheetahs, and a tiger, remained closed on Monday as authorities investigate the incident.

In a statement on social media, the zoo confirmed that the lion will not be euthanized following the incident. The animal did not leave its enclosure and posed no risk to others. The zoo also stated that it would cooperate fully with police and Workplace Health and Safety officials to understand how the attack occurred.

The victim was reported to be in stable condition following the surgery. The zoo plans to reopen shortly after the incident, with additional safety measures in place to ensure the safety of its visitors.

This attack is a reminder of the inherent dangers of working with predators, even in a controlled environment. The zoo has a reputation for its commitment to animal welfare and safety, and it is hoped that this incident will not deter visitors from supporting its work.
